What makes a subculture (the characteristics)? What subcultures are you a part of? What ones do you see most prominently on campus or in your community?
Brainstorm possible subcultures that you would like to investigate and do some preliminary research. Are they present on social media?
A subculture is "a group of people with a culture (whether distinct or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong." The article also reads that, "The study of subcultures often consists of the study of symbolism attached to clothing, music and other visible affectations by members of subcultures, and also the ways in which these same symbols are interpreted by members of the dominant culture."
I think that I'm part of a few subcultures. My main subculture would probably be K-pop (Korean pop) fans. I am super into this community. We tell a lot of jokes that only K-pop fans will understand. We all listen (and obsess over) the same music and love the same stars. Most of us tend to lost contact with music coming out that's from our own cultures because we are so involved with the Korean pop culture - which involves never really listening to real radio or anything (always blasting K-pop). People can't really understand what we listen or dance to, so we might even appear to be alien-like! So I think that's a great example of a subculture I'm in.
However, K-pop isn't super popular in the states (especially on the East Coast), so I don't see a lot of it here. The main subcultures I see here might be the "hipster" fad, or maybe even like anime fans. I wonder if sports fans, thought it's such a huge fandom, could be considered a subculture. Because people who aren't involved or know much about sports don't know what's going on when they watch it. Sports fans can have inside sports jokes as well.
I might want to investigate like, a Gothic Lolita subculture or something extreme like that. Seems awesome! :) I know for a fact that they have an online presence. Lots of people who are interested in Gothic Lolita find close-knit communities online so they aren't deemed crazy or weird in normal society. Almost like a behind closed doors thing. Although, that might not be exactly true.
